Marley Under Mainsail

“...'cause every little thing, gonna be alright”

Creatures of habit are we, whether on land or sailing the seas. Comfortable repetitive routines characterized our final few blissful days under sail before reaching our final port of call. We anticipated reaching Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands, just before nightfall on the last day of our journey. These islands are home to 21 species of dolphins and whales, more than 600 species of fish, and 16 types of sharks. Needless to say, Jack was euphoric.

After so much time together, each of us had naturally gravitated to a favorite go-to person when bored, though everyone enjoyed frequent chats with Lua. I would stop by the galley several times throughout the day to see what she was improvising for the next meal.

Bob and I stayed busy with a variety of minor maintenance and repair projects and answering questions from Jack and Julie about sailing, seamanship, boat building, and ocean navigation. Between chores, I entertained cast and crew with classic islandy tunes, including a Bob Marley medley that captured the buoyant spirit of those last few fabulous days at sea, chasing the sun, aboard mama Kalea:

Rise up this mornin', smile with the risin' sun
Three little birds, pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs, melodies pure and true
Sayin', this is my message to you

Don't worry, about a thing,

'cause every little thing, gonna be alright

Don't worry, about a thing,

'cause every little thing, gonna be alright

Stir it up, little darlin', stir it up...

It's been a long, long time, since I've got you on my mind
Now you are here, it's so clear, to see what we could do, just me and you

Will you quench me when I'm thirsty, cool me down when I'm hot
Your recipe my darlin' is so tasty, and boy you sure can, stir dis pot

We're jammin', I want to jam it with you
We're jammin', we're jammin', and I hope you like jammin' too

Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, you can do it, anyhow
'Cause I and I will see you through
But every day we pay the price with a little sacrifice
Jammin' till the jammin' is through

I don't want to wait in a vain for your love

I don't want to wait in a vain ...

From the first time I blessed my eyes on you girl
My heart say follow through

But I know now that I'm way down on your line
but the waiting feeling's fine
So don't treat me like a puppet on a string
'Cause I know how to do my thing
Don't talk to me as if you think I'm dumb
I want to know when you're gonna come

'Cause summer is here and I'm still waiting there
Winter is here, I'm still waiting there

I'm a rebel, soul rebel, I'm a capturer, soul adventurer

See the morning sun on the hillside, not living good, travel wide

Said, I'm a living man, and I've got work to do
If you're not happy children, then you must be blue

I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot no deputy

I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot no deputy

All around in my home town, they're trying to track me down
They say they want to bring me in guilty, for the killing of a deputy
For the life of a deputy, but I say...
